Topic/Intent of book: This book suggests a different path to excellence than the “10K hours to expertise rule” suggested by Malcom Gladwell in “Outliers: The Story of Success” (this is also an excellent book). The book refers to a variety of studies as well as anecdotes about the benefits of generalization as opposed to strict specialization. This book argues for diverse education, experience, and interests and how they can overlap to provide insights and advantages.
I selected this book because: This book was recommended by my brother, Bob (https://www.linkedin.com/in/bobsesek/). I have read many books recommended by my brother and he felt that this book should be read by all those wishing to spark their creativity. My personal background and interests have “range” and, if nothing else, this book made me feel good about my life choices (some of them anyway).
Recommendation: This is book is a great source of inspiration of inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs. This book makes a compelling case for seeking a variety of experiences and education in multiple disciplines whether sports, hobbies, or occupations. The benefit of varied education/experiences is extolled, but the author does also concede how and when specificity may be superior.
Major lessons from this book: Learning that is slow and difficult may be more long-lasting and impactful than learning that this quick and easy. The author describes “wicked” learning environments and “kind” learning environments. Generalists tend to prevail in the former where specialists often have the advantage in “kind” (i.e., simple, straightforward, and largely static environments). It is not only ok to struggle with learning sometimes, it might actually be more beneficial to do so. The perspectives and experiences afforded by a range of activities is valuable and should be actively sought.
Book Inspirations: I will definitely read other books by this author and in this genre. I highly recommend this book to others and included a brief discussion of it my classes. I am particularly inspired to look for the connections among my varied interests and for ways to leverage the meaningful overlap of them. This book inspires exploration outside your current expertise and comfort zone. A great book for those wishing to create or invent.
